Did you know that some folks take their online identity so seriously that they are signing up for services that will maintain their online presence after they have passed on? Or another one that sends emails that appear to have been sent by you “from the grave”?
Yahoo blogger Eric Pfeiffer has written an interesting article about this for The Sideshow.
Of course, we don’t need to tell you how important the internet is these days! But now that we are on the subject, we wanted to remind you to check in with us first before making any changes to your internet connection – just in case. Internet connectivity forms a critical part of SUM/IT infrastructure. Any time a change is made, it has the potential to affect how your system operates. A quick check with Bruce or Mike will give you the peace of mind that although your connection or internet services may have changed, the way your POS system operates will remain just the way you like it!

Are you prepared to handle a system failure?
Consider the recent experience of one of our customers. In the midst of a typical day they experienced every small business owners’ worst nightmare: hard disk error! (Did you know that many computer experts recommend replacing your business computer every 5 years?)
When initial efforts to bring the system back up failed and the system would not reboot , it was necessary for them to overnight the system to us for more intense diagnostics. Thankfully, we were able to repair their system and ship it back to them. Their total downtime: 3 days! One thing that factored greatly in the quick turnaround for this repair was the fact that the customer had a current backup tape from the day before the failure!
This customer was running an older system with a backup tape drive and did pay attention to assure that they were getting successful backups on a regular basis. SUM/IT also offers an alternative: SUM/IT Cloud Based Data Backup Service (formally known as RSYNC). When you subscribe to this service, SUM/IT sets up a communications process to ensure that a copy of your data is uploaded to the SUM/IT Cloud on a nightly basis. This small investment for your business can provide valuable peace of mind. With a monthly charge of $50 this service provides a lot of value.
If you have a system that is more than a few years old or one for which replacement parts are not readily available, you should also be prepared to have to purchase a replacement system. As long as a backup copy of your data is available, SUM/IT can configure a new system with a copy of your backup data within a few business days. Should we be unable to repair your existing system a budgetary cost for a replacement server (plus expedited freight charges) is approximately $2500 to $3000.
Make sure you have a “Business Operations Backup” procedure in place in case disaster should ever strike. This includes having sales receipt pads, calculators and staff trained on what to do and how to work with customers when your SUM/IT system is not available.
Call us! We’ll be happy to help you plan and prepare to keep you business running as smooth as possible.
